NAMPA, Idaho – It's not often freshmen make a huge impact early in their collegiate careers.
The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team has a pair of special ones, though.
Jordan Pinson and
Erin Jenkins didn't miss a shot Saturday helping the Nighthawks (2-0 overall) roll to an 86-49 victory against Cal State Monterey Bay (0-2) in a GNAC/CCAA Crossover game at Johnson Sports Center.
"Our freshmen can play," NNU coach
Steve Steele said. "They are talented and while they won't always shoot like that, we have enough depth to make up for it. We also have the depth and leadership to help the freshmen be successful."
Pinson was 1-for-6 and Jenkins 1-for-7 in the season opener Friday, but they quickly turned the page Saturday.
Jenkins was 3-for-3 from the field and 8-for-8 from the line for a game-high 15 points, while Pinson was 4-for-4 from the field for 12 points.
"I think I was just more confident," Pinson said. "Coach Steele told me to keep shooting the ball and that the shots are going to fall, so I didn't feel any reluctance to shoot. And the girls were super supportive and wanted me to shoot the ball."
The Nighthawks as a team shot the ball well, finishing 30-for-59 from the field and 12-of-22 from beyond the arc.
McKenna Walker added 13 points, four rebounds and three steals,
Maya Rodgers had 10 points and four rebounds,
Carly Parker had nine points and four rebounds and
Raquel Jardine had eight points and eight rebounds.
"I think the two wins are really important," Jenkins said. "It shows how hard we are working and what we are putting into practice."
Despite the final score, the Nighthawks struggled a bit defensively against Monterey Bay's unorthodox offense. Adjustments at halftime, though, led to a dominating third quarter.
Jenkins, Pinson and Parker all hit 3-pointers in the quarter,
Zoe Wessels had a pair of baskets and Walker had four points. Eight Nighthawks scored in the quarter as they outscored the Otters 23-9 in the frame.
"We were not terribly fundamental on the defensive side," Steele said. "Because we press a lot we have to sometimes relax and sit down and think when we are playing halfcourt defense."
NNU is back in action at 5 p.m. Friday against Colorado Christian at Westminster in Salt Lake City, Utah.
