NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team saw its three-game losing streak come to an end against NCAA Division II's top-ranked team Thursday.
The Nighthawks (3-6-1 overall, 3-1-0 GNAC) lost 5-0 to Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at NNU Field.
"There is a reason they are No. 1," NNU coach
Joel DeLass said. "We have a young group and quite frankly we shot ourselves in the foot, but Simon made us shoot ourselves in the foot."
Simon Fraser (10-0-0, 4-0-0), which has now outscored opponents 37-3 this season, scored three times in the first half and twice in the second.
Jake Levine received a red card in the 56th minute, meaning the Nighthawks played down a player the rest of the way. Levine will also miss Saturday's game against Western Washington.
Jacob Hillyer made seven saves against the loaded Canadian team, which moved the ball with precision.
"This is the level we eventually want to get to at some point," DeLass said. "We started three freshmen and had five on the field for most of the first half. It is an opportunity for them to grow and see what the next level is."
The Nighthawks host Western Washington at 4 p.m. Saturday.
