NNU women do everything well in win over Simon Fraser

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team had everything clicking Saturday.

The Nighthawks' press was giving Simon Fraser fits, they shot lights out from the field and the free-throw line and dominated the glass.

It all added up to an 88-65 victory against the short-handed Clan in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Johnson Sports Center.

Simon Fraser had just six players suited up because of injuries.

"It was definitely kind of weird, but more exciting because this was an opportunity for us to run the break and get them tired," NNU junior McKenna Walker said. "We didn't really feel bad because they have beat us in the past, so this was a little bit of revenge."

The victory ended a nine-game losing streak to Simon Fraser with NNU's last win coming on Jan. 24, 2013. The victory also gives NNU as many wins this season as it won overall the last two seasons.

"It's exciting, especially starting from when we weren't very good and going through all the different coaching changes," Walker said, "and having some stability with coach (Steve) Steele here.

"So, it's been fun doing well and it makes it that much sweeter when you had kind of a crappy first year."

McKenna Walker scored a team-high 16 points in the victory.

Walker scored a team-high 16 points and added three steals. Danielle Jardine added 16 points and four rebounds, Raquel Jardine had 12 points and six rebounds, Carly Parker had 11 points and Marina Valles had 10 points and six assists.

"We have stuck together (this season)," Parker said. "Even the three games we've lost, we've picked each other up and played as a team. Sticking together and playing for each other is keeping us going."

NNU forced 22 turnovers, scoring 24 points off of them. The Nighthawks also held a 39-27 advantage on the glass and shot a blistering 51.6 percent (33-of-64) from the field and 18-of-19 from the line.

"I think that we did a good job of being fairly consistent at all the thing we want to be good at," Steele said. "We had no long stretches where we were bad on offense or defense. We adjusted quickly and kept getting back to being fundamental. When you do that, you see boxscores like the one tonight."

The win completes the first half of the conference season for NNU (12-3 overall, 8-2 GNAC), which is tied for second place with Seattle Pacific just one game behind Alaska Anchorage. SPU upset Anchorage on Saturday night.

NNU hits the road next week playing at Western Oregon on Thursday and at Concordia on Saturday.
