MONMOUTH, Ore. –
Colette Gall scored six points in overtime and the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team escaped Western Oregon with a 72-67 victory Thursday.
The Wolves tied the game at the buzzer after NNU let a six-point lead get away late in regulation.
After the Wolves opened the extra period with a bucket,
Avery Albrecht tied it with a driving layup. Gall then made two free throws to put the Nighthawks on top 65-63.
Lexi Tubbs then had a steal and a layup at the other end and after two free throws by the Wolves, Gall made two of her own for a 71-65 lead with 29 seconds left.
"I think we just tried to stay aggressive in overtime," NNU coach
Steve Steele said. "A lot of teams get too tight and we preached to stay ourselves and keep the pace high. We tried to clean up some things we hadn't done well in regulation, which was rebounding."
It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Nighthawks, who remain tied with Seattle Pacific with two losses in league play.
"They are tough to play at their place," Steele said. "It's also good for us to have to grind out a win and play a close game. It builds character.
"Last year we lost eight or nine one-possession games and this year I think we have only lost one of those. I am proud of our character and the way we have grown from last year to this."
The Nighthawks play at Concordia at 3 p.m. MST on Saturday.
Tubbs finished Thursday's game with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Gall added 12 points and six rebounds,
Danielle Jardine had 11 points and seven rebounds before fouling out and Albrecht finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
"Coco is always really consistent," Steele said. "She never gets too excited or too low. She plays at an even keel and every team needs a captain like that. I thought she had a nice overtime."
