NAMPA, Idaho – In the battle of the only two unbeaten teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the 12
th-ranked Northwest Nazarene University Crusaders defeated the 21
st-ranked University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 25-11 at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa.
Improving their league-leading record to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the GNAC, the Crusaders also broke the Seawolves streaks of 12-straight GNAC wins, 16-straight road match wins and 18-straight GNAC road victories. The last time the Seawolves lost on the road was here in Nampa in 2015. UAA falls to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in GNAC action.
"Our offense was great tonight. It was a little bit of a struggle last weekend, but tonight Kendra, Mari and Madi had really good games," commented NNU head coach
Doug English. "If we play like that we are not going to lose very many."
Madi Farrell had a match-high 17 kills and
Kendra Bodine and
Mari Thomas both posted double-doubles. Bodine with 15 kills and 10 digs and Thomas with 14 kills and 13 digs.
"Then our defense was solid. We out-dug them 71-54 and Shayli had 26 digs. That means we are serving the right people, creating opportunities to score and Hailey is setting people who are scoring," English added.
Shayli Siegfreid finished with a match-high 26 digs and
Hailey Cook dished out 44 assists.
"UAA is a good serving team, we had a rough patch in set three. But then we figured it out and responded really well in set four." The Crusaders committed four of their seven receiving errors in the third set, but bounced back in set four.
"Once again our crowd was awesome, we love playing in front of them."
A crowd they will have an opportunity to play in front of again on Saturday afternoon when NNU hosts the University of Alaska Fairbanks at 2:00 p.m.
