SALT LAKE CITY -
Jonathan Guardado scored in the 17th-minute of play and it was all the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team would need as the Crusaders defeated Westminster College 1-0 in an NCAA Division II non-conference match at Dumke Field on the Westminster campus.
"Thankful to get out of Utah with a victory today," commented NNU head coach
Joel DeLass. Â "A strong first half by our guys, but Westminster took it to us in the second half and were lucky to survive and see out the win."
Guardado took a cross off the foot of
Edwin Quiroz and sent it home from 10-yards out for the only tally of the match and it held up as NNU goalkeeper
Jacob Hillyer posted a clean sheet with three saves.
"It was fun to see Jonathan get his first collegiate goal and Jacob and the backline get their first shutout," DeLass added.  "Hopefully we can learn from this weekend and continue to mature as a group. We've got a tough stretch against the California schools the next couple weeks and we've got to learn to cut back on the self-inflicted chances we gave up today."
Evenly played on paper, Westminster finished with 10 shots and the Crusaders with nine. WC's Max Medley stopped four shots in goal for the Griffins.
The Crusaders will travel to Southern California next weekend, facing Cal State Dominguez Hills and Azusa Pacific in non-conference action.
