NAMPA, Idaho –  The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team fell 5-0 against 20th-ranked California Baptist University this afternoon in a non-conference NCAA Division II match at the NNU Soccer Field.

The Crusaders complete the non-conference portion of their schedule 3-2-0 and will open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week as they travel to Montana State University Billings on Thursday.

Ranked 20th-nationally, Cal Baptist improved to 4-0-1 with the win.

Facing adversity from the start, the Crusaders played a man down for a majority of the match.  Just seven minutes into the match, NNU goalkeeper Jacob Hillyer was drawn off his line to prevent a chip-in shot, but contacted the ball outside the 18-yard box with his hand, drawing a red card.

Following the exchange of goalkeepers by the Crusaders and playing a man down, Cal Baptist scored the opening goal a minute later when they were awarded a penalty kick after new Crusader goalkeeper Alex Basulto made a diving save off the foot of Daniel Westhold, but tripped the Lancer attacker in the process.  Aidan Apodaca stepped up and converted the PK, giving CBU the lead 1-0.

The short-handed Crusaders held tough and trailed 2-0 at the half, allowing a goal in the 36th-minute when Apodaca scored his second goal of the match when he finished an Abe Placito ball up the middle from 10-yards out.

The second half would see Apodaca score three more goals, finishing the match with all five CBU goals and a new Lancer single-match record.  He scored in the 54th, 58th and 75th-minutes, with two unassisted and one from Joey Chica.
