Behind Megwa's big night, NNU hammers Saint Martin's

NAMPA, Idaho – Watch a NNU men's basketball game this season and you've likely seen point guard Obi Megwa doing circus shots in the lane.

The 6-foot point guard has a variety of shots from scoops, to finger rolls, to fade aways – you name it and he'll try it.

He had all of those shots working Saturday, scoring 31 points to lead the Nighthawks to a 92-67 victory against Saint Martin's at Johnson Sports Center.

"I had it going early," he said. "Credit to my teammates – they kept encouraging me to keep going, so that is what I did."

The victory marks the first time NNU (6-2, 2-0 GNAC) won its first two Great Northwest Athletic Conference games in a season.

"We feel great about it," sophomore guard Jayden Bezzant said. "I know last year we got off to a bad start, but we have a better team this year; we are more connected this year and we have the ball rolling."

It wasn't rolling from the outset Saturday, as Saint Martin's (6-2, 1-1) jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 16-5. A quick timeout by coach Paul Rush and an animated discussion fixed that.

"We get in that timeout and coach … he drilled us," Bezzant said. "That's happened a couple of times and we have to come out with a better sense of urgency."

Despite the slow start, the Nighthawks weren't to be denied.

NNU immediately went on a 15-4 run and ended up outscoring the Saints by 18 points the remainder of the half.

Despite early second-half foul trouble for leading scorer Maurice Jones, the Nighthawks continued to dominate offensively and cruised to their easiest win of the season.

"When Maurice went out of the game, we just have to turn up the defensive rebounding because he kills it on the boards," Bezzant said. "On offense, we have enough weapons that it comes by itself."

Bezzant, Megwa and Khalil Thompson all did their share, especially Megwa who scored a season high while scoring on a variety of moves.

"That is something I've worked on all summer," he said. "I spent hours and hours in the gym this summer trying to work on my game. It is somewhat paying off. I still have some work to do."

Megwa added five rebounds and four assists to go with his 31 points. Jones finished with 13 points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes, while Thompson and Bezzant had 12 points each.

Sam Roth added seven points and 10 rebounds, while Marko Lepovic made the most of his second consecutive start scoring five points and grabbing six rebounds.

Luke Chavez's 16 points and six rebounds led Saint Martin's.
