DENVER, Colo. – The Northwest Nazarene University men's basketball team lost 103-93 in overtime Saturday to Regis University in a game played at Metro State.
The Nighthawks (4-2) were outscored 17-7 in overtime as they struggled to score in the extra frame.
Khalil Thompson had a game-high 29 points, making 10-of-15 from the field.
Maurice Jones added 18 points and nine rebounds, Obi Megwa had 16 points and seven rebounds,
Nikola Prvulj had 12 points and
Jayden Bezzant added 10.
"I love going to battle with these guys," NNU coach
Paul Rush said. "They played so hard and overcame a lot of adversity on this trip. I'm really proud of their effort and how they defended tonight."
NNU led by nine with 3 minutes left in the game, but couldn't hang on. After a layup by Megwa with 37 seconds left gave NNU an 86-84 lead, the Nighthawks got a defensive stop and Regis fouled
Sam Roth.
Roth missed the first and made the second, but it was waved off because of a lane violation. Regis then tied it on a layup with 5 seconds left. NNU had a shot blocked at the end of regulation.
"I didn't do a good job of putting them in position to be successful late in the game," Rush said. "This one is on me."
The Nighthawks shot just 2-of-11 in overtime, including 0-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line.
NNU opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday against Seattle Pacific at 7 p.m. at Johnson Sports Center.
