NNU women hand Point Loma its first loss of the season

NAMPA, Idaho – Five players scored in double figures and the Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team handed Point Loma its first loss of the season with an 89-82 victory Wednesday at Johnson Sports Center.

Lexi Tubbs had a team-high 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists in the victory for NNU (4-1). McKenna Walker added 16 points and seven rebounds, Marina Valles had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists, and Maya Rodgers and Danielle Jardine each finished with 10 points.

"I think Point Loma is the best team we've played this year," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "We are obviously very happy to come away with a win. I expect they will win their conference or finish very high in their region."

NNU's bench outscored Point Loma's 40-7 and the Nighthawks made 11 of 22 free throws in the victory.

"We did a good job utilizing our depth," Steele said. "That will be key for us this year, obviously. It is nice to have that kind of depth and nice to get important contributions from kids off the bench."

The Nighthawks led 46-34 at halftime but Point Loma started the third quarter on a 15-2 run to take the lead. Avery Albrecht hit a 3-pointer to give the Nighthawks the lead back and they never relinquished it the rest of the way.

"We recovered; we didn't panic," Steele said. "We've just got to come out more focused. I think we were excited to be up double digits going into halftime."

The Sea Lions (4-1) nearly had to wear NNU's practice jerseys after Alaska Airlines lost the California school's jerseys on their flight up. The jerseys were eventually found and rushed to Nampa in time for the game.

Point Loma wing Roya Rustamzada recorded her fifth consecutive double-double to open the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Post Tayla Hepburn scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting.

"Maya Rodgers was big tonight," Steele said. "She was guarding and attacking their best player (Rustamzada)."

NNU opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Nov. 30 at the University of Alaska.
