Off-shooting night costs NNU in Mayors' Cup loss

| By:
Box Score CALDWELL, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team suffered an off-shooting night Tuesday and it cost them in a 76-68 loss to cross-county rival College of Idaho in the United Heritage Mayors' Cup.

NNU (3-1) shot 36.1 percent from the field and made just 5 of 23 3-pointers in the loss, which does not count against its record as it was an exhibition contest.

"The guys played hard tonight," NNU coach Paul Rush said. "I'm really proud of their effort and how they kept playing through adversity."

The Nighthawks defeated College of Idaho 76-70 last week at home in the other half of the Mayors' Cup matchup.

Obi Megwa led NNU with a game-high 27 points. Jayden Bezzant had 12 and was the only other player in double figures for the Nighthawks.

"We need to find a way to put them in better positions to score and get looks offensively," Rush said.

The Coyotes (3-3) threatened to blow the game open midway through the second half, but the Nighthawks went on a 12-5 run to get the lead down to single digits. NNU eventually closed the lead to six at 69-63 with less than a minute to go, but could get no closer.

Talon Pinckney's 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists led College of Idaho, which shot 56 percent in the second half.

NNU returns to action Friday against Metro State and on Saturday against Regis University in Denver, Colo. The Nighthawks open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Nov. 30 against Seattle Pacific.
