Megwa, Jones lead NNU to third consecutive victory

Box Score NAMPA, Idaho – Obi Megwa and Maurice Jones both had big nights as the Northwest Nazarene University men's basketball knocked off Academy of Art 84-76 on Friday in the NNU Invitational at Johnson Sports Center.

Megwa had 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, as he consistently got to the basket using dribble penetration and a variety of moves to keep the Urban Knights off balance.

"We're asking Obi to create and score and he was able to do that," NNU coach Paul Rush said. "Offensively we're learning how to play together and defensively we have to find more consistency."

Jones finished with a game-high 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, giving him his third consecutive double-double. He was the only player to average a double-double in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference last season.

NNU turned the ball over 19 times and its bench was outscored 49-15, but the Nighthawks (3-0) still found a way to win.

"The positive for me is we played ugly, but were able to scrap together enough to come away with a win," Rush said. "All great teams have to overcome ugly nights where things aren't clicking, shots aren't falling and you still have to find a way to have success.

"I think we did that through offensive rebounding and giving ourselves multiple possessions."

NNU used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to blow the game open, as Jones hit a 3-pointer, Olamilekan Adetunji made a layup, Jayden Bezzant hit a jumper, Megwa had a bucket and a free throw and Sam Roth capped the run with a 3-pointer for a 75-58 lead.

NNU grabbed 18 offensive boards to just eight for the Urban Knights (0-3). Bezzant added 17 points, six rebounds and three assists for NNU.

In the first game of the NNU Invitational, Concordia (Ore.) defeated San Francisco State 102-97. The tournament continues Saturday with Academy of Art playing Concordia at 6 p.m. and San Francisco State facing NNU at 8 p.m.
