Box Score NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team defeated Seattle Pacific University 1-0 in overtime this afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at the NNU Soccer Field.
The win improved the Crusaders to 8-4-0 overall and 5-2-0 in GNAC play, matching both the record for the number of wins in conference play and the number of overall wins since NNU transitioned to the NCAA Division II level in 2002. It is also the program's most wins against NCAA Division II opponents in a season, as seven of the eight Crusaders wins were against D.II schools.
Scoreless after regulation play, NNU's
Madi Taylor took advantage of an SPU defensive miscue, stealing a pass back toward the Falcon goalkeeper just 54-seconds into the extra period. Taylor stole the pass and then beat keeper Molly Stinson to the center of the box, scoring from 13-yards out into the open net. It was her sixth goal of the year and her first game-winner.
"We showed our depth today. Every girl stepped up and filled important roles," commented NNU head coach
Mary Trigg. "This win just set a new school record for D.II wins. The girls wanted it so bad and I couldn't be more proud."
NNU goalkeeper
Daniele Ortiz finished with 4 saves in the shutout performance while SPU's Stinson also had four.
The Crusaders finished with a 9-8 edge in shots and a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.
Seattle Pacific fell to 6-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in conference action.
The golden goal victory was set up by
Hannah Holm, who took a shot that sailed just over the goal. It was the ensuing goal kick by Stinson that was played short to a defensive player. The defender attempted to play the ball back to Stinson but Taylor was there to intercept and put the match away.
