Backup goalie Basulto-Merito makes key saves

Box Score NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team earned a scoreless draw with Western Washington on Thursday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

It was the third consecutive overtime result for the Nighthawks (6-6-1, 3-4-1 GNAC), who are 1-1-1 in the span, and the second consecutive time they've had a 0-0 tie with Western this season.

"I'm proud of the guys for battling hard," NNU coach Joel DeLass said. "We've got a lot of guys banged up and sick, so for us to get a result against a quality team like Western is great."

The Vikings (6-4-4, 5-2-2) are in second place in the conference with three games to play, while NNU is in fifth.

"I thought today we had opportunities to win it, we just didn't convert," DeLass said. "Hopefully this is a learning experience for us."

The Vikings had more shots on goal than the Nighthawks (6-4), but goalie Alex Basulto was strong in goal despite finding out late that he was playing.

It was only the second game Basulto has appeared in this season and he made a pair of nice saves.

"Alex Basulto did great for us after finding out he was going to need to start right as the team walked out for the national anthem," DeLass said. "For the most part, the back line made his job easy, but when we needed a big save in the second overtime he was there."

NNU forward Jake Levine had a penalty kick saved by Western goalie Tyler Visten after a handball in the box in the first half. The Nighthawks had a few good scoring opportunities throughout the game, but couldn't find the game-winner.

NNU hosts No. 10 Simon Fraser at 4 p.m. Saturday.
