Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The Northwest Nazarene University women's soccer team fell 1-0 this evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match on a rainy and cold night at Concordia University in Portland.
Delayed 30-minutes due to a lightning storm, the teams played scoreless through the first half of play and the Cavaliers (9-2-1, 6-0-1 GNAC) netted the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 57th-minute off the foot of Gabrielle Ewing.
"It was a weird day with hard travel stuff," commented NNU head coach Mary Trigg. "The lightning delay, penalty calls and some injuries. I was glad to see our girls still battle and never stop."
The Crusaders (8-5-1, 5-3-1 GNAC) most dangerous scoring chances came in the closing minutes of the first half when Corrinah Schaefer's shot sailed wide right and in the 79th-minute when Madi Taylor's missed wide to the left.
NNU keeper Daniele Ortiz made four saves in the match as Concordia held a 12-4 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The Crusaders return home on Saturday to host Western Oregon University at 12:30 p.m. at the NNU Soccer Field. NNU will look to continue to build on their record-setting season, as the Crusaders have won more NCAA Division II games than any other year since the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II.
