LACEY, Wash. — The Crusader ladies started a late-season surge in dramatic fashion on the road Saturday.
Looking to finish the year strong, the Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team got a late goal off a corner kick to score a 1-0 win over host St. Martin's, completing a season sweep of the Saints in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Cassandra Clarke headed in a corner kick by teammate
Madi Taylor with 5 minutes, 45 seconds left in regulation, lifting NNU to the victory.
"Cassandra scored a great goal for us," said NNU head coach
Mary Trigg, whose team outshot the Saints 10-6. "It was great to see our hard work pay off."
NNU (4-11-0 overall, 2-8-0 GNAC) then held on from there as
Daniele Ortiz made two saves to post her second shutout of the season.
"We were disciplined in the back and determined to shut the game out," Trigg said. "I'm very proud of our girls."
The win gives NNU momentum headed into the final week of the season as the Crusaders will host No. 1-ranked Western Washington on Thursday at 4 p.m., then host Simon Fraser for "Senior Day" next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Finkbeiner Park on the NNU campus.
