BURNABY, B.C. — The Clan proved to be unfriendly hosts Thursday night.

Perennial powerhouse Simon Fraser scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute and managed to thwart the Crusader attack all night long, scoring a 2-0 upset over the 12th-ranked Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

"Today is a perfect example of the fact that possession isn't the only thing that matters in soccer," said NNU head men's soccer coach Coe Michaelson. "As much of the ball as we had, we gave away a really poor penalty to put ourselves in a hole and from that point on we were nowhere near dangerous enough in the final third.

"The key now is to recover for Saturday and make sure we get a result at Western Washington."

Adam Jones' penalty-kick goal put SFU on top 1-0 with 20 minutes, 40 seconds gone, and while NNU (8-2-1 overall, 4-1-1 GNAC) controlled play, it didn't translate into a goal.

Outshooting the Crusaders, 11-5, the Clan (4-2-3, 3-1-2) managed to net one more goal to ice the win with 7:47 gone in the second half.

Ryan Foo made three saves in net for the Crusaders, who matched Simon Fraser in shots on goal, as each team had five in the contests, but not on the scoreboard.

NNU looks to rebound Saturday night at 8 p.m. (Mountain Time) when the Crusaders play at Western Washington.
