SAN FRANCISCO – A breakaway goal two minutes into overtime spoiled a strong season-opening effort for the Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team.
Justine Hernandez scored unassisted off a breakaway 1:47 into the extra session, giving host San Francisco State a 1-0 win over the Crusader women.
"It was a disappointing loss but we played well and had the run of the game in the second half," said first-year NNU coach Mary Trigg. "We just have to finish our chances."
The Crusaders (0-1 overall) outshot the Gators (1-0) in the contest, 10-8, but couldn't get a ball past SFSU goalkeeper Allison Land, who made four saves in the win.
NNU keeper Argia Phillips proved unbeatable for 90-plus minutes, making one save in the game before Hernandez's winner.
"One mistake and that's what happens," said Trigg.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Trigg enjoyed seeing her team develop as the game went on, adding that the Crusaders adapted to a more physical style of play as they game continued.
Kelsey Martin led NNU's offense with six shots in the game, while freshman Kayla Williams drew praise from coach Trigg in her collegiate debut, as did senior Katie Butler, who played despite and injury.
The Crusaders look to bounce back from the setback on Saturday as they continue a quick California road trip with a game at Dominican University at 2 p.m. (PT).
