NAMPA, Idaho – The run is over for the Crusaders, for now.
The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves took control in the second set and never let up, topping Northwest Nazarene 20-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 in an early battle between Great Northwest Athletic Conference frontrunners Saturday night at the Johnson Sports Center in the NNU campus.
"They served really, really well so our passers struggled a little bit. It's hard to get in a rhythm when (setter) Michelle (Terpstra)'s struggling to get the ball and it's hard to run an offense that way," said NNU coach Doug English.
The tough-serving Seawolves had 10 aces in the match, three coming from Katelynn Zanders in an 8-0 run midway through the second set that helped UAA snap a 10-10 tie and take control.
From there, the Crusaders (7-3 overall, 3-1 GNAC) played well in spurts, but found themselves playing catch-up most of the remainder of the night.
In the third set, a Kaitlyn Tuholski kill got NNU as close as 12-9 down, but the Crusaders never got closer.
And in the fourth set, a tandem block by sisters Michelle and Andrea Terpstra drew NNU as close as 21-17 back before the Seawolves (10-6, 4-0) finished off career win No. 100 for coach Chris Green.
Andrea Terpstra and Elayna Rice again led NNU's attack with 15 and 13 kills, respectively, while Rice added 14 digs.
Michelle Terpstra added 41 assists for NNU and Tuholski made 10 digs for the Crusaders, who look to start a new win streak when they travel to No. 11 Western Washington on Thursday and Simon Fraser on Saturday.
Coach English knows his team won't let up after its first league setback.
"I think the focus is going to be there either way, it's just getting back to a couple days of hard work and I think we'll be fine," he said.
And the hard work will be on a continual focus.
"I think it's just serving and passing," English said. "That's the same thing we focus a lot of the times on anyway."
