NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team celebrated Kid's Day on Saturday by grabbing its first league point of the young season.
A stingy defensive effort by the Crusaders earned them a 0-0 draw in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play against visiting Simon Fraser on the NNU campus.
"We fought hard as a team and were solid defensively," NNU coach Mary Trigg said.
The only drawback to the day was the Crusaders inability to notch a game-winning goal as NNU (1-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 GNAC) outshot the Clan (0-3-1, 0-1-1) 15-6 in the contest.
"We're creating a lot of chances for ourselves but we have to get better at finishing," Trigg said.
Two of the best chances of the day came late in regulation as Lexi Fesenbek had a point-blank shot blocked by Simon Fraser goalkeeper Teagan Rae Sorokan with eight minutes to play, then Sorokan punched a shot by NNU's Kaylee Cropper just over the crossbar with seven minutes remaining.
Argia Phillips made one save in goal to earn her first shutout of the season, helping NNU grab a point, while Sorokan made five saves in net for the Clan.
After the game, the Crusader players signed autographs for dozens of kids in attendance.
Next up for the Crusaders are games at Central Washington on Thursday and at Seattle Pacific on Saturday.
