BELMONT, Calif. – Saturday's proving to be the Crusaders day on the volleyball court.

After notching its first win of the season last Saturday at Dixie State, the Northwest Nazarene volleyball team continued its Saturday success by sweeping Holy Names and Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday at the Route 92 Showdown hosted by Notre Dame de Namur.

"It was a pretty good day overall for NNU volleyball and a great way to get ready for conference play," NNU coach Doug English said of the sweep, as the Crusaders finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Next up for the Crusaders (4-2 overall) is Great Northwest Athletic Conference play as NNU travels to play at St. Martin's and Western Oregon on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

And NNU rolls into league play with tons of momentum after beating Holy Names, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17, to start play Saturday, then sweeping CSULA, 25-19, 25-13, 31-29.

In the opener, an Elayna Rice kill followed by a tandem block by Rice and Jenna Caywood broke a 13-all tie and put the Crusaders in control. From there, they never looked back, taking the opening set on another Rice kill.

Back-to-back kills from Andrea Terpstra and Rice snapped another 13-13 tie in the second set, and again NNU again kept the pressure on, this time finishing off the set with an Andrea Terpstra kill.

In the final set, a pair of Andrea Terpstra kills sandwiched around a Linnea Phillips ace this time snapped a 12-12 score, igniting a 6-0 NNU surge as the Crusaders cruised to the three-set win.

Andrea Terpstra finished the match with 15 kills and three blocks while Rice added 12 kills and Michelle Terpstra had 37 assists and 14 digs for NNU.

In NNU's final match of the day, a Rice kill and service ace ignited a 4-0 run for the Crusaders, who stretched a 17-16 edge and rolled to a quick one set to none lead.

The second set was never really close as a Taylor VanValey kill snapped a 7-7 score, and NNU dominated from there, winning 17 of the final 23 points.

In the third and final set, a kill each by Rice and Kaitlyn Tuholski staved off set points for CSULA (4-3) before a tandem block by Andrea Terpstra and VanValey finished off the match win.

"That was probably the best match we played all year," English said. "Everybody played really well.

"Everybody was just good today," he added.

Andrea Terpstra again led the way for NNU with 14 kills and eight blocks while Rice added 10 kills and seven digs. Michelle Terpstra added 28 assists and just missed a triple-double in the second match as she added nine digs and nine kills, while Taylor Roberts had 19 digs and Tuholski made 12 digs.
