HAYWARD, Calif. - The Northwest Nazarene volleyball team earned a split Friday at the Route 92 Showdown hosted by Cal State East Bay, falling to Azusa Pacific to start the day before regrouping to beat Humboldt State in the afternoon.
Azusa Pacific notched a 33-31, 25-21, 25-22 over NNU in both teams' tournament opener before NNU responded with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-21 victory over the Lumberjacks.
The Cougars (4-1 overall) rode the momentum of a nip-and-tuck first set win to the victory.
Andrea Terpstra had 11 kills to lead the Crusaders, while Elayna Rice added nine kills and 11 digs.
"Azusa Pacific is a tough team and we just had too many errors in transition and were not able to score points," NNU coach Doug English said.
"Andrea Terpstra was great for us," he added.
Taylor Roberts added 16 digs, Linnea Phillips had 13 digs and Michelle Terpstra dished out 32 assists for NNU.
The Crusaders (2-2) quickly bounced back, taking control of their afternoon match as a Taylor VanValey kill put NNU up 16-9 in the first set, en route to a quick lead.
A pair of late kills from Andrea Terpstra and another by Kaitlyn Tuholski helped NNU take the second set after the 'Jacks (3-2) forced ties at 22-22, 23-23, and 24-24.
In the final set, a Rice kill snapped a 14-14 tie and sparked a 3-0 Crusader run, and from there the Crusaders held on to complete the sweep.
"Against Humboldt we won with serving," said English, whose team had four aces and was led by Michelle Terpstra with two.
Michelle Terpstra also dished out 30 assists and had 10 digs in the win, while her sister, Andrea, again led the offense with 10 kills and added six blocks.
Rice added nine kills, Tuholski had eight kills and Roberts led the defense with 15 digs.
"Our middles, Jenna Caywood (6 kills, 4 blocks) and Andrea Terpstra again were really effective and helped us win the match," English said.
NNU is back in action at the tournament with two more matches Saturday, playing Holy Names at 9 a.m. and CSU Los Angeles at 3 p.m. Both matches are Pacific Time.
