NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene University baseball team split an NCAA Division II West Region non-conference doubleheader against Cal State University Dominguez Hills this evening at Vail Field, falling 7-5 in game one but bouncing back to win the nightcap 3-2.

The Crusaders (15-16) were led by Logan Parker and Sam Cook at the plate in game one as Parker finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and Cook was 2 for 4 with a solo home run in the fifth.

The Toros (16-15) finished the opener with 13 hits and were paced by Ivory Thomas (4 for 5, 3 runs), Chris Allen (2 for 4, 1 RBI) and Tony McClendon (2 for 5, 1 RBI).

Dominguez Hills led 3-1 into the ninth inning and then plated four unearned runs, highlighted by a Bubby Rossman three-run home run, to take a 7-1 lead into the bottom half.

The Crusaders matched the Toros ninth-inning output, scoring four runs on three hits in the frame, but CSUDH reliever Tyler Mark was able to hold the Crusaders off and secure the victory.

Sean Wardour (5-3) earned the win for the Toros and starter Nick Bland (1-2) took the loss for NNU.

Game two saw the Toros strike for single runs in the fifth and sixth as Jordan Yallen drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and Brady Conlan plated Carlos Avila with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The Crusaders would rally in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times as designated hitter Jeremy Richardson walked, Parker doubled down the left field line and then Skyler Souza scored Richardson with a ground ball to the shortstop that also allowed Parker to advance to third.

Charlie Gorzo's fly ball to centerfield scored Parker on the next pitch and tied the score at 2-2.

Crusader catcher Jamie Mitchell kept the momentum going as he singled and then scored from first on Jon Matos' two-out double that hugged the left field line to provide the game winning run for NNU.

NNU reliever Ryan Kuhn (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Jeremy Burk and Andrew Groves earned his fifth save of the season.  The Toros starter Dimitri De la Fuente (2-3) took the loss in a complete-game effort.

The teams will return tomorrow at Noon for the final two games of the four-game series.
