NAMPA, Idaho - The Northwest Nazarene and Western Oregon University baseball teams divided a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill this evening at Vail Field in Nampa. Western Oregon won the opener 11-0 and the Crusaders bounced back to take the nightcap 8-4.
Western Oregon (9-8, 4-2 GNAC) game-one starter Spenser Watkins earned the win and improved to 3-2 after allowing just one hit in six innings. Brian Pisca and Spencer Trautmann finished the final three frames and preserved the shutout for the Wolves in game one.
NNU (8-11, 2-4 GNAC) trailed 2-0 after three innings in game two but scored seven in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the nightcap. The Crusaders rally was highlighted by a
Fernando Robles grand-slam blast, one of the four hits NNU produced in the inning.
The Wolves responded with two runs in the top of the fifth, but
Charlie Gorzo added a solo home run for insurance in the bottom of the sixth.
The teams will return to Vail Field tomorrow at Noon to complete the four-game league series.
