Crusaders drop pair against Wildcats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NAMPA, Idaho – The Central Washington University baseball team swept a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference games against the Crusaders this afternoon, winning 6-1 in the opener and 5-4 in an extra-inning nightcap at Vail Field.
 
Logan Parker led the Crusaders in game one, going 3-for-5, but five CWU players finished with two hits, led by Kyle Sani who also had three RBI's.
 
Starter Stuart Fewel improved to 2-1 for the Wildcats and NNU's Tyson Flannery (0-2) took the loss.
 
Charlie Gorzo plated the only Crusader run, scoring Logan Parker with a sacrifice fly in the third.
 
Jamie Mitchell, Skyler Souza and Gorzo each had two hits in game two as the Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, courtesty of a two-run double by Mitchell that also plated an unearned run on an error by the CWU centerfielder.
 
The Wildcats (7-9, 3-1 GNAC) battled back to tie the score at 3-3 with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.
 
The Crusaders (7-10, 1-3 GNAC) answered in the bottom of the fifth when Gorzo led off with a double to the right-center gap and scored on a Sam Cook single to regain the lead at 4-3.
 
CWU went back to work in the top of the sixth and forced the game into extra-innings after Daniel Kathman doubled home Kasey Bielec.
 
The Wildcats then scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth as Kramer Ferrell singled to lead-off, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Peterson and scored on Joel Johnson's single up the middle.
 
NNU's Jon Matos (1-2) took the loss in relief of starter Fernando Robles while CWU's Randy Button (1-2) earned the win in long-relief of Jason Lotzer who was chased in the first inning. 
 
Button tossed 7-1/3 innings, giving up six hits and did not surrender a walk.
 
NNU returns to action next weekend, hosting Western Oregon University in a four-game GNAC series on Friday and Saturday at Vail Field.
