NNU Baseball Splits In Opening Day

OAKLAND, Calif. - After dropping game one 5-8, the Northwest Nazarene University baseball team defeated Holy Names University 12-9 in game two of today's non-conference double-header action. 

"We didn't perform the way we would have liked to today," commented head coach Tim Onofrei, "We knew after playing in a gym for pre-season that we would come out a bit rusty but we are hoping for a better performance in tomorrow's double-header."
 
In game one, the Hawks of Holy Names University scored four runs in the fourth and sixth innings to help top the Crusaders 8-5.
 
NNU earned 12 hits in game one. Greg Hata was 2 for 4 from the plate. Charlie Gorzo earned 2 RBI's.
 
The Crusaders Andrew Groves (0-1) took the opening game loss.
 
Max Eggleston (1-0) earned the win for the Hawks. Tyler Truitt was 3 for 4 with one RBI to lead Holy Names.
 
In game two the Crusaders battled back after trailing 8-5 after five innings of play. NNU was able to score seven runs in the final two innings of tonight's game, lifting the Crusaders past the Hawks 12-9.
 
Fernando Robles was 4 for 4 from the plate while teammate Greg Hata went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's. Logan Parker was 2 for 4 and added 2 RBI's for NNU. Junior Sam Cook had 3 hits with 5 appearances at the plate. Catcher Jamie Mitchell went 2 for 5 with a team leading 3 RBI's.
 
Nick Bland (1-0) earns his first win of the season while Tyler Marsh receives the save after two-innings pitched.
 
Brian Glynn of HNU receives the loss. Ben Gamba went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's to lead the Hawks in game two.
 
Both teams will be back on the field tomorrow in Oakland, California. Game one of tomorrow's double-header begins at 6:00 p.m. (PST) on the fields of Laney College.
