Crusaders celebrate “Senior Day’ with overtime win

| By:
Box Score NAMPA, Idaho – They celebrated before, and happily, afterward on "Senior Day."

The Crusaders' Lexi Fesenbek blasted home the game-winner from 20 yards out in the fleeting seconds of the first overtime, giving the entire Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team something to celebrate: a 1-0 victory over visiting St. Martin's in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Thursday on the NNU campus.

"It feels good," said NNU coach Mary Trigg. "I was looking around to make sure it was real.

"And what a shot, what an awesome shot to end the game."

Fesenbek's shot came from the left side of the box with 30 seconds left on the clock in first overtime session, and not even the diving efforts of St. Martin's goalkeeper Gina Cardenas made a difference.

Fesenbek got the ball from Kelsey Martin, who dropped a pass back to her teammate after taking a long through ball from Sarah Blum.

A perfect end to the final home game of the season for NNU (2-11-3 overall, 1-9-3 GNAC), which had seen its share of heartbreak late in contests this season.

But on "Senior Day," the Crusaders would not be denied.

"Our girls, you could just see the mentality that they were just fighting for our seniors," Trigg said. "They love our seniors, our seniors have dedicated so much to this program and they were doing it for them."

The contest was the final home game for Monique Ray, Julianne Steele, Kellynn McDaniel, Katie Butler and Lauren Kuklenski. All five were honored prior to Thursday's game.

Then, for 99 ½ minutes, both teams played hard without much to celebrate either way before Fesenbek's winner.

Argia Phillips made nine saves in goal in the shutout for NNU, which plays one more game this season, on Saturday at Montana State Billings.

Cardenas made seven saves in goal to lead the Saints (4-12-0, 3-10-0), who outshot NNU 17-12 in the contest.
