BELLINGHAM, Wash. – It's been a disheartening season for the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team, one summed up by a disheartening outcome Saturday evening.
The Crusaders banged two shots off the post that could have broke a scoreless tie, and in the end left the field disappointed after an overtime goal lifted host Western Washington to a 1-0 victory in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
"I feel like a broken record, but that wasn't what we deserved tonight," said NNU coach Coe Michaelson. "To hit the post twice and create the chances we did second half – it came down to one breakdown and they made us pay.
"Tonight sums up our season, it's just hard to believe," Michaelson added.
After a fairly uneventful first half, both teams picked up their play in the second 45 minutes, with the Crusaders nearly snagging the lead in the 60th minute.
The Viking defense blocked a shot by NNU scoring leader Fredy Razo and Crusader senior John DiLulo jumped on the rebound, firing a shot off the post.
It was one of many good chances for the Crusaders (3-6-5 overall, 3-5-3 GNAC) , who sent 10 shots toward the WWU goal, but none got past Vikings keeper Keegan Rogers, who made one save in the shutout.
Then, with 5:43 gone in overtime, Andrew Weishaar took a pass forward from Jeremy Wentzel and tucked it into the net, giving WWU (9-3-3, 7-1-3) the win.
Ryan Foo finished with five saves in goal for the Crusaders, who look to rebound when they next play at the University of Mary (N.D.) on Thursday.
