BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Catherine Miles scored three straight goals to open the second half, leading No. 12 Western Washington to a 6-0 win over visiting Northwest Nazarene in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer on Saturday.
The upset-minded Crusaders played tough in the opening half, giving up just a lone goal to Jessica Bertucci with 15 minutes, 35 seconds gone in the game.
NNU clamped down the rest of the half, as Western Washington held just a 9-5 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes.
But Miles scored 3:28 into the second half, then added two more goals for the Vikings (14-1-0 overall, 11-1-0 GNAC), who also got a goal each late in the game from Delanee Milles and Bertucci.
"We stuck to our game-plan in the first half and were able to stay close to a nationally-ranked team," NNU coach
Mary Trigg said.
"Second half, we didn't do what we were supposed to or what we talked about and they punished us for it."
WWU control play the final 45 minutes, outshooting the Crusaders (1-11-3, 0-9-3) 18-3 in the half, and 27-8 in the game.
That kept Crusader goalie
Argia Phillips busy, as she finished with six saves on the day.
NNU now returns home for "Senior Day" on Thursday when the Crusaders host Saint Martin's at 3 p.m.
