Short-handed Crusaders fall in overtime

| By:
Box Score BURNABY, B.C. – It's been a season of near misses for the Crusader women's soccer team, and another one struck Thursday night in Canada.

Kelsey Martin's team-leading fourth goal of the season gave Northwest Nazarene the lead temporarily until host Simon Fraser responded with a goal early in the second half, and another in overtime, to top the Crusaders 2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

The Crusaders (1-10-3 overall, 0-8-3 GNAC) jumped in front when Kayla Williams sent a free kick forward to Martin, and the freshman striker booted it home with 22:04 left to halftime.

"We finished a good chance in the first half," said NNU coach Mary Trigg.,

The lead remained in NNU's favor, 1-0, until Sophie D'Souza struck 5:57 into the second half for the Clan (1-10-2, 1-8-2), finishing off a cross from teammate Jenna Piovosan.

Then hard luck struck the Crusaders late in regulation – as it has done many a time this season.

NNU lost on an overtime goal previously and on another in the final two minutes, then settled for ties instead of wins in two more games when opponents scored a goal in the final three minutes.

Thursday, the hard luck came in the form of a red card on top senior defender Katie Butler with 2:08 left in regulation, leaving NNU short-handed one player.

The call took its toll in overtime when Kate Pearsall booted home a loose ball in front of NNU's goal with 4:50 gone in the extra session.

"After some unfortunate calls, and being down a player, we couldn't hold the lead," said Trigg.

Argia Phillips made six saves in goal for the Crusaders, who now look to rebound when they play at No. 12 ranked Western Washington on Saturday.
