Box Score ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Crusaders scored their biggest upset of the season Thursday night, and did it convincingly.
Northwest Nazarene's volleyball team handed league-leading Alaska Anchorage its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference loss of the season, dominating offensively in a 17-25, 25-23, 25-9, 25-22 victory.
"It feels great, it was a great win for us," said NNU coach
Doug English, whose team improved to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the GNAC. "To beat them on their home court was great, and we really beat them decisively."
After falling in the opening set, the Crusaders evened the match with a strong finish in the second set, snapping a 20-20 tie with a
Taylor VanValey kill followed by back-to-back tandem blocks by
Kaitlyn Tuholski and
Andrea Terpstra.
The Seawolves (15-7, 9-1) closed the margin to 23-22 before an
Andrea Terpstra kill finally finished off the set, evening the match.
Then, NNU blew the Seawolves off the court in the third set a kill each from
Elayna Rice and
Jenna Caywood put NNU up 11-4 early, and on its way to a rout.
"We were really efficient offensively and didn't have any errors," English said of the third set, adding, "and we kind of blocked them out of the set."
NNU finished with 14 kills without an error on 23 attacks in the set and added four blocks for points.
The Crusaders then built a 16-11 lead on an
Andrea Terpstra kill in the fourth and final set, and never let up, closing out the win.
Rice led NNU with 15 kills and 14 digs, while
Andrea Terpstra added 10 kills and seven blocks, and
Michelle Terpstra dished out 37 assists and added 18 digs in the win.
"Michelle set great tonight for us executing what we're trying to do," said English.
Defensively,
Taylor Roberts led the way with 19 digs and also helped out with 10 assists.
"Taylor and Linnea (Phillips) made some great digs for us in a lot of big points," English added.
The Crusaders now continue their road trip through Alaska with a match at Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday.
