Box Score ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Host Central Washington never let the Crusaders get their offense rolling, as the Wildcats notched a 26-24, 25-20, 25-18 win over Northwest Nazarene in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball Saturday night.
"We made a lot of unforced errors," NNU coach
Doug English said, as NNU had 24 hitting errors in the match and just 33 kills.
That margin played a factor in the first set, as NNU (10-5 overall, 6-3 GNAC) had 10 kills and nine hitting errors in a nip-and-tuck battle for the early lead in the match.
But it was early miscues by the Wildcats (9-8, 5-4) – three straight – that helped build a 14-11 lead for NNU.
It was an advantage the Crusaders couldn't maintain.
Down 24-21 late, NNU did get a kill each from
Andrea Terpstra and
Elayna Rice, followed by a
Kaitlyn Tuholski ace, to even the score, 24-24, before a kill each by CWU's Kaitlin Quirk and Erin Smith closed out the set.
Miscues by NNU again played a part in the second set's outcome as a pair of Crusader hitting errors combined with two service aces by the Wildcats allowed Central Washington to snap a 20-20 tie and take a two set to none lead.
"Our passing was not good enough for our offense to ever get going," English said.
The third set proved no different. NNU miscues led to leads of 9-5 and 19-11 for the Wildcats, who finished of the match in straight sets.
Rice led NNU's offense with 12 kills while
Andrea Terpstra added 10 kills in the setback.
Taylor Roberts led the defense with 15 digs, Tuholski added 10 digs, and setter
Michelle Terpstra dished out 28 assists for the Crusaders, who return to action on Thursday when they play at league leader Alaska Anchorage.
