SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Northwest Nazarene University men's soccer team defeated Academy of Art University 1-0 in today's soccer match in San Francisco.
“This has been a brutal way to open the season, with four road games in eight days. But today the guys delivered.” commented head coach
Coe Michaelson.
Both teams went scoreless in the first half and for a majority of the second half. But, in the 83
rd minute NNU's
Jon Curry had a free kick that hit the wall and bounced back to him. He struck the ball off a volley from 20 yards out into the far post side net, to put the Crusaders up 1-0.
“We put 90 good minutes together, and the second half in particular, we were absolutely dominant, “ said Michaelson. ”The score doesn't do the performance justice, but at the end of the day we got the win and it feels great.”
The Crusaders outshot the Urban Knights 17 to 13. Art. U had 14 fouls to NNU's 11.
Alfredo Ontiveros earns the win in goal and is now 1-2-1.
“Now we finally get a few days to recover and address a few things but we are definitely headed in the right direction.” Commented Michaelson. NNU will be back on the road next week as they travel to Bellingham, Washington to start GNAC action. They will take on Western Washington University on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
