Burnaby, BC - The Northwest Nazarene University women's soccer team defeated Simon Fraser University 1-0 in today's Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.

Despite going scoreless in the first half the Crusaders were able to get off six shots in the first period with four on target.

Both teams would go scoreless in the first half, but just five minutes into the second half senior Sarah Staropoli took a corner kick and Whitney Wood was able to get her head on the cross and put it in to put NNU on the board 1-0.

The Crusaders would hold out the rest of the half with a solid defensive stand holding the Clan scoreless.

"The girls played well today. They did a great job of creating chances and we capitalized early in the second," commented head coach Jamie Lindvall. "I thought our quality of possession definitely improved in the second half."

NNU had 14 shots in the match while holding the SFU to only 3 attempts in the second half.

Goal keeper Tanya Zickefoose earned the win with one save, while SFU's Amanda Gilliland had 8 saves in the loss.

"I'm proud of our team's composure and tenacity today!" said Lindvall.

NNU is now 5-5 overall and 2-4 in GNAC play. The Clan drop to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference action.

The Crusaders will travel to Billings, Montana next Thursday to take on the Yellow Jackets at 3:30 p.m.
