Crusaders Take Down #12 SFU Clan

BURNABY, BC - The Northwest Nazarene University men's soccer team beat #12 nationally ranked Simon Fraser Clan 2-1 in today's soccer match in Burnaby. The Crusaders handed the Clan their 
first loss since November 21, 2010 and it also marked the end of the Clan's 24 game unbeaten streak.

"We are obviously thrilled with the result.But, this has been coming for us. We really suffered from a difficult preseason trying to get everyone on the field," commented head coach Coe Michaelson. "so it has taken some figuring out, but for the last few games it has been coming together.
 
Both teams went scoreless in the first half. NNU had five shots while SFU had seven in the first period.
 
In the 71st minute of play, Jaime Torres of NNU crossed a ball from the wing and Daniel Clark was able to get his foot on it to send the ball home and get the Crusaders on the board 1-0.
 
Later in the second half, in the 86th minute, Emerson Peredo served a long ball from mid-field up to Jaime Torres who was able to convert on a shot to put NNU up 2-0.
 
The Clan would respond in the 88th minute as Chris Bargholz was able to score a goal on an assist from Carlo Basso to get the Clan their first and only goal of the match. 
 
Goal keeper Alfredo Ontiveros earns the win while also having six saves in the game.
 
NNU now goes to 2-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in GNAC play. The Clan of SFU now drop to 5-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.

"It has been such a difficult start with six road games, so we are just thrilled to finally be going home." said Michaelson.
 
The Crusaders will be back to home action next Thursday as they host Seattle Pacific University at 5:30 p.m. in Nampa.
