Crusaders Win Two At Seaside Invitational

SAN DIEGO - The Northwest Nazarene University volleyball team opened up the 2012 season with two wins at the Seaside Invitational hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University.

The Crusaders opened play this morning against Cal State Stanislaus, earning their first win of the season three games to one (25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19).

NNU sophomores Michelle Terpstra and Kaitlyn Tuholski had a great start to the 2012 season. Terpstra tallied a team high 37 assists and added 12 digs and 7 kills. Tuholski was the team leader with 18 kills on .333 hitting and also had 10 digs for the Crusaders. 

Crusader freshman Elayna Rice had an impressive start to her career as she had 15 kills, hitting .560 and also adding a team high 13 digs in this morning's contest. 

Andrea Fett led the Warriors with 16 kills. Kendal Munoz had a match high 38 assists for Stanislaus.

In tonight's match the Crusaders were able to sweep the host team Point Loma Nazarene three games to none (25-22, 25-11, 25-19). 

The Crusaders were lead by senior Becky Flores, she had 16 kills with a hitting percentage of .444. Setter Michelle Terpstra had 29 assists and 8 digs while freshman Linnea Phillips led the team with 14 digs.

"It was a great day for us as a team. We have a lot of new people doing new things," commented head coach Jared Sliger. "It was great to get in a rhythm early. Our lefts had big games in the morning and our middles were really tough tonight." 

Point Loma's Delaney McCraney had ten kills while Natalie Hamill led the team in assists with 27. 

NNU will be back to action tomorrow at the Seaside Invitational as they face Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11 a.m. and Azusa Pacific at 5 p.m.
