Wildcats take two at NNU

NAMPA, Idaho - The Central Washington University baseball team swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill from the Crusaders this afternoon, winning game one 10-8 and taking the nightcap 4-0.


The Crusaders (25-22, 14-16 GNAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in game one after a Jamie Mitchell solo home run in the second and a Charlie Gorzo RBI single in the third.  However, the Wildcats took the lead with four in the fourth and never looked back, leading for the remainder of the day.

The Wildcats (19-29, 11-19 GNAC) runs in the fourth came courtesy of a Brady Kincannon RBI single and a three-run home run off the bat of Brett Gray.  CWU would add three runs in sixth and three in the seventh.

Fernando Robles added a solo home run for NNU in the sixth and the Crusaders pulled to within two runs at 10-8 in the bottom of the eighth as Mitchell added a second home run in the game, a three-run shot and Jon Matos delivered a two-run shot to left field.

CWU's Randy Button improved to 4-2 with the win and Tanner Knutson earned his first save of the year, closing out the ninth.

Patrick Patterson took the loss for the Crusaders and is now 5-2 on the season.

Mitchell finished three for five with a game-high four RBI's for the Crusaders.  Both Derrick Webb and Kyle Sani each had three hits for CWU.

In game two the Wildcats Brandon Rohde improved to 6-3 on the mound with a complete-game shutout victory.  Rohde scattered eight NNU hits, striking out 15 in the seven-inning contest and walked just three.

NNU's Aaron Vaughn, who also went the distance, fell to 4-3 with the loss.

CWU scored in the second, fifth and seventh to earn the 4-0 victory and were led Brady Kincannon with two hits.

Gorzo paced the Crusaders with two hits.

The teams will return tomorrow at Noon to play the final doubleheader of the season for both teams.
