NAMPA, Idaho - Starting pitchers Patrick Patterson and Aaron Vaughn each delivered quality performances this afternoon and evening as the Northwest Nazarene University baseball team swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill from Saint Martin's University.

The Crusaders won game one 11-4 and completed the sweep with a 5-3 win in game two.  NNU improves to 23-20 overall and 12-14 in GNAC play.  SMU falls to 14-28 overall and 10-14 in league games.

Patterson improved to 5-1 overall with his game one victory and Vaughn moved to 4-2 with the win in the nightcap.  Sean McDonald came on to record the final out in game two, picking up his second save of the year.

Game One

The Crusaders opened the four-game series with the Saints by scoring once in the first, courtesy of back-to-back-to-back singles by Derek Bettinson, Zach Steele and Logan Parker off starter SMU Thomas DeBoer.

NNU would add two more in the third on a Steele two-run double and tack on four in the fifth after a Bettinson RBI single and a three-run home run off the bat of Charlie Gorzo.  Gorzo's fifth home run of the season proved to be the game winner as the Saints scored three in the seventh and one in the eighth.

McDonald added a two-run home run in the sixth, his second of the season, and both Ben Clare and Bettinson picked up RBI's in the seventh.

Bettinson finished 4 for 5 with three RBI's and both Steele and McDonald had three hits.  Logan Parker and Kaleb DeHaas each had two hits as the Crusaders finished with 17 safeties.

The Saints were led by Chandler Tracey, Spencer Dodd and Adam Hudspeth.  Tracey went 3 for 4 and Dodd and Hudspeth were each 2 for 3.

Game Two

The Crusaders used two big hits to capture the nightcap as Jon Matos delivered a three-run home run in the third and designated hitter Alex Barbee doubled home a pair of runs in the fourth.

Vaughn scattered eight Saints hits and worked 6 and 2/3 innings before McDonald came in to shut the door.

McDonald entered from center field to face Saints clean-up hitter Tracy with the bases loaded, getting a called third strike on a curveball to end the game.

Tracy and SMU designated hitter Travis Jones each had two hits as the Saints out-hit the Crusaders eight to five.

McDonald finished 2 for 3 at the plate and Fernando Robles added a single in the fourth.

The teams will return tomorrow at Noon as the Crusaders present Cancer Awareness Day at Vail Field.

The Crusaders will honor those in attendance who have been touched by cancer with a balloon release at 11:45 a.m. and will wear special 'pink' highlighted uniforms during the doubleheader against the Saints.

Donations and gift cards will be accepted as admission to the games and will be donated to St. Luke's to benefit patient care.

Buffalo Wild Wings in Nampa also joins the Crusaders and St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute as a partner of the 2012 Cancer Awareness Day.
