Charlie Gorzo set two school records and tied a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record this afternoon in leading Northwest Nazarene University to a sweep of Minot State University at Elmore Vail Field in Nampa. Gorzo went 5 for 9 with three home runs and nine RBI's in the opening game this afternoon.
Gorzo (Jr., 6-2, 220, Murrietta, CA), a transfer from Palomar Community College, set new NNU single-game records with his nine RBI's and three home runs. The RBI totals match the GNAC record that was set by Tom Lepley of Western Oregon on Feb. 26, 2006 against Grand Canyon University. His 15 total bases falls just one short of the GNAC record.
The Crusaders improve to 4-0 after defeating the Beavers 25-4 in game one and 10-4 in game two.
NNU pounded out a school-record 28 hits in game one, breaking the record of 27 set on Mar. 24, 2010 against Hawaii Pacific University. The Crusaders 48 total team bases falls just two short of a new GNAC mark.
Derek Bettinson and
Zach Steele each hit solo home runs as Bettinson finished 2 for 4 with two RBI's and Steele was 3 for 4 with three RBI's.
Multiple hit performances also came off the bat of
Sean McDonald (3-5, 2 runs, 1 RBI),
Fernando Robles (3-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI),
Ben Clare (3-3, 1 RBI), Zach Morse (2-5, 3 runs) and Kaleb DeHass (2-4, 1 run).
McDonald (1-0) earned the pitching victory as he struck out three, walked one and gave up four hits in his six innings of work on the mound.
Steele (Sr., 6-2, 190, Santa Barbara, CA) had Gorzo's new records within reach in game two as the transfer from Chico State hit a two-run home run in the third and a three-run blast in the fourth.
NNU finished with 10 runs on 13 hits as
Sam Cook finished 3 for 4, McDonald was 2 for 4 and
Fernando Robles hit his first home run of the season, a two-run knock in the four-run third inning.
Patrick Patterson (1-0) earned the win with
Aaron Vaughn and
Nate Forseth working the final three innings.
Andrew Roach led Minot State (0-4) at the plate, going 5 for 8 in the two games. Mitch Olson hit his first home run of the season in game two, a two-run shot in the seventh. Jamin Heller (0-1) and Paul Thompson (0-1) each took the losses for the Beavers.
The Crusaders will travel to California next weekend to face Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif. on Friday and Saturday.
