Crusaders Complete Opening Day Sweep Against Minot State

NAMPA, Idaho – Behind a strong opening day performance from starter Zeb Sneed the Northwest Nazarene baseball team opened the 2012 season with a 5-1 victory over Minot State University this afternoon at Vail Field.  The Crusaders completed the sweep with an 8-4 win in game two.

Sneed (1-0) did not surrender a hit in six innings of work in the opener.  He struck out 11, walked four and hit one batter in throwing 108 pitches.  Ryan Brown and Fernando Robles combined to close out the final three innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Derek Bettinson led the Crusaders (2-0) at the plate going 4 for 5 with three RBI's.  The senior first baseman finished with three RBI singles.  Freshman Kaleb DeHass debuted with a 3 for 4 effort and scored one run.

Jon Matos, Sean McDonald, Zach Steele and Sam Cook all recorded hits for NNU as the Crusaders scored five runs on 11 hits.

Cole Stober (0-1) took the loss for the Beavers (0-2).  Ryne Hornecker, Mike Turcotte and Doug Richter each had hits for MSU.

Alex Barbee went 2 for 3 with two RBI's in the nightcap as the Crusaders scored eight runs on nine hits.

Charles Pollock (1-0) earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and one run in five innings.

Andrew Roach (0-1) gave up four runs on four hits and took the loss for the Beavers.

Turcotte led the Minot State offense in game two with a 2 for 4, one RBI effort.

The teams will complete the four-game series tomorrow at Noon at Vail Field.
