Crusaders split at SMU - Win Series 3-1

| By:

Sean McDonald of Northwest Nazarene drove in five runs and Saint Martin's Bobby Twedt had six hits as the two teams divided a GNAC baseball doubleheader Saturday at Saints Field.

The Crusaders won the nine-inning opener 10-2. Saint Martin's took the nightcap 6-5 in two extra innings to avoid a four-game sweep by NNU.

The Saints completed their season with a 25-22 record, including 21-11 in conference play, while the Crusaders (30-14, 15-13), who conclude their campaign next weekend with a four-game series at Western Oregon, reached the 30-win plateau for the second time in the past four seasons.

In the first game, McDonald and Derek Bettinson each had two-run singles as NNU exploded for six runs in the sixth to break up a 1-1 deadlock.

McDonald also had a sacrifice fly in the eighth. NNU then added two final runs in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded hit batter.

The Crusaders were actually outhit 10-7, but Saint Mitchers walked nine, hit four batters and threw five wild pitches.

Twedt had four of SMU's hits, while Aaron Johnson and Travis Jones had two each. Cody Brooks drove in both Saint runs with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and sacrifice fly in the eighth.

NNU rallied from a 5-1 deficit to score four runs in the seventh and force extra innings in the nightcap. McDonald drove in two runs with a single to tie the contest at 5-5.

Saint Martin's, however, got the winning run two innings later as they loaded the bases on a single by Andrew Elke and two fielder's choices before Evans ended the game with a single through the left side.

Elke, Evans and Twedt all had two hits for the Saints. McDonald, Drew Drilik and Ryan Udy had two each for NNU.
