Brian Barkdoll scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Northwest Nazarene University men's basketball team to a 75-57 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory over Western Oregon University on Tuesday night at the Johnson Sports Center.
Barkdoll (Sr., Portland, OR) entered the contest with 994 career points and became the 33rd player in NNU men's basketball history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
Prior to tonight's game, GNAC commissioner Richard Hannan presented NNU head coach Tim Hills with an engraved Wooden Bowl, recognizing Hills career in the GNAC over the past 10 seasons and his retirement at the end of this season.
The fifth-straight win for the Crusaders improved their record to 13-11 overall and 9-8 in GNAC play, while Western Oregon dropped to 13-14 overall and 8-9 in conference action.
Tarance Glynn led Western Oregon with 16 points and five rebounds and Blair Wheadon added 13.
The Crusaders out-rebounded the Wolves 37-22 and held WOU to 40.7-percent (22-54) shooting from the field and a 14.3-percent (2-14) mark from the three point line. NNU shot 55.6-percent (30-54) from the floor and 50-percent (7-14) from the arc.
The Wolves jumped out early, taking an 8-1 lead on the Crusaders after Kyle Long converted a jumper in the paint just over three and one-half minutes into the game. The Crusaders would rally, but would not draw even with the Wolves until
Joey Wayman buried a long-range bomb from 28-feet to tie the score at 15-15 with 11:47 to play in the half.
Trailing 21-20 with 11:28 left in the half, the Crusaders constructed a 13-2 run that included four points from Barkdoll, four points from Egwuonwu, a triple from Golden and a jumper from Eisinger to make it 33-23 with 3:11 to play.
Taking a 37-27 lead to the locker room, the Crusaders would not surrender the lead in the second half and lead by as many as 19 down the stretch.
NNU will close out the regular season on Thursday night, hosting Saint Martin's University at 7:30 p.m. The game will be part of a men's and women's doubleheader, with the women's team playing Western Oregon University at 5:15 p.m.
