BISMARK, N.D. - Scoring the game-tying goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation play, The University of Mary went on to defeat the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team 4-3 in the second overtime period on Saturday afternoon in an NCAA Division II non-conference match in Bismark, North Dakota.
The Crusaders (5-6-1) led 3-2 into the final minute of regulation as
Stephen Marshall scored on a penalty kick in the 10th-minute, Ibk Modupe-Ojo added his first collegiate goal off an
Evan Horwood assist in the 39th-minute and
Sal Sanchez scored an unassisted goal in the 66th-minute.
However, Mary's (1-7-2) Andrew Newhouse tied the game at 3-3 at 89:52, finding the net during a scramble in the box off a Jake Meyer assist. Joe Wood provided the game-winner in the 101st-minute, beating NNU goalkeeper
Zander Engeman after assists were credited to both Ryan Bucholz and Nikola Nikolic.
"I am shocked with the way the result has gone today," commented NNU head coach
Coe Michaelson. "To give up a goal with eight seconds left in a game we controlled the whole way...I can't fault our effort."
Michaelson continued, "We gave away too many free kicks and they were very difficult to defend with the balls they knocked into the box and all the runners they committed. We didn't play poorly...we were just a bit unlucky. I feel for the guys, but we have to get back up and fight on."
Engeman finished with five saves for NNU and UM goalkeeper Michael Frenzel had two. Mary out-shot the Crusaders 16 to 7 and corner kicks were even at six each.
The Crusaders will return to league action next weekend, hosting Saint Martin's on Thursday and Seattle Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
