BISMARK, N.D. - The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team defeated The University of Sioux Falls 2-1 on Thursday afternoon in an NCAA Division II non-conference match hosted by The University of Mary.
Jose Oregon scored his third goal of the season in the 26th-minute and
Sal Sanchez added his second of the year in the 60th-minute to help the Crusaders improve to 5-5-1 overall on the season.
Oregon was assisted by Benny Mangeac in the opener as Mangeac sent a pass from the center over to the left side, enabling Oregon to find the upper right side of the goal.
Alex Mangeac provided the help on Sanchez goal in the second half, sending a crossing pass off a free kick to the right side, just outside the six for Sanchez to finish into the upper left side of the net.
"Tonight had the making of a very comfortable and comprehensive win until an off the ball incident resulted in a penalty kick and a red card," commented NNU head coach
Coe Michaelson. "However, in spite of going down a man we managed to hold onto the ball and kill the game. Credit to the guys for coming through that adversity, and as long as we learn from the situation, we will move forward and be a better team for it."
USF (3-6-1) scored in the 75th-minute on a penalty kick by Amare Eyayou. NNU's Danile Starbuck received a yellow card and Benny Mangeac received a red card that resulted in the penalty kick opportunity.Shots were even at 10 each and Sioux Falls held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Crusaders will face University of Mary on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Bismark.
