Honolulu, HI - The Northwest Nazarene University men's soccer team opened the 2010 season this afternoon with a 4-0 victory over Chaminade University in an NCAA Division II West Region non-conference match played at St. Louis Field in Honolulu.
Alex Mangeac opened the scoring in just the 9th-minute of the season with an unassisted strike from 30-yards. Mangeac intercepted a pass from the Chaminade defense and converted the long-range shot just inside the crossbar over the reach of Chaminade goalkeeper Daniel Dartt's outstretched arms.
"Today was a good team effort and a nice road performance to open the season," commented NNU head coach
Coe Michaelson. "While it is great to win against other West Region opponents, it's just one game and now we need to prepare for our next match." Which will come on Saturday when the Crusaders (1-0) return to action in Laie, Oahu against BYU-Hawaii.
John Stump put the Crusaders ahead 2-0 in the 23rd-minute with the first of his two goals in the match. Stump's first tally was off the rebound of a Renatto Brito shot that came straight off the crossbar and found Stump in the box. He then scored the final goal of the contest in the 76th-minute when Benny Mangeac played a through-ball and Stump was able to beat goalkeeper Hayes Sperry one-on-one.
Freshman
Evan Horwood scored his first collegiate goal in the 72nd-minute when Benny Mangeac played into the box, found the foot of Stump, who then played a one-touch pass back to Horwood for the counter.
The Crusaders outshot the Silverswords 26-2 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. NNU keeper
Mitchell Rice face only two shots, saving one. Dartt hustled for seven saves for CU, while Sperry grabbed three.
