NAMPA, Idaho - Salvador Sanchez scored twice and Renatto Brito's penalty kick in the 69th-minute provided the game winner as the Northwest Nazarene University men's soccer team defeated The College of Idaho 3-2 on Friday evening in front of an NNU Soccer Field record crowd of 402 fans.
Sanchez scored the opening goal in the 16th-minute of action when he took two dribbles to his left and struck from 25-yards to just inside the left post. After the break it was Sanchez again in the 51st-minute, hitting a one-touch rocket from 18-yards out off an
Alex Mangeac cross, just inside the top right corner of the box, Sanchez's shot caught the inside of the far post, bouncing off the post and the crossbar on it's way into the net.
The Coyotes scoring burst came in the 59th and 60th-minutes when Brad Byers and Stephen Franden scored under a minute apart. Byers scored his first goal of the season off a free kick on the left side from 20-yards. Byers bent the right-footed, free kick rocket around the NNU wall and scorched it into the upper right corner, untouched. Franden struck from only 15-yards, deflecting the ball out of a group of Crusader defenders and finished a strong shot past a diving NNU goalkeeper Mitch Rice.
With the intensity level up another notch, the Canyon County rivals played even until the 69th-minute when a foul just inside the right side of the box gave Brito the penalty kick opportunity. Renatto finished the kick low and inside the right post for the game winner and his first goal of the season.
Sanchez leads the Crusaders with three goals, having also scored the game-winner on Monday at Hawaii Pacific.
College of Idaho (0-2) goalkeeper Aaron Reynolds made three saves, while NNU's Rice stopped seven. C of I finished with a 14-13 shot advantage and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
NNU (3-1) will not return to the pitch until September 23rd when the Crusaders open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, hosting Western Washington University at 4:30 p.m.
