LACEY, Wash. - Charles Pollock came within four outs of throwing a perfect game as Northwest Nazarene clinched second place in the GNAC with a 12-4, 3-1 doubleheader sweep of Saint Martin's Friday at Saints Field.
The Crusaders (28-19, 20-10) are assured of their best conference record in GNAC history. Their only other .500 plus season came in 2006 when they posted a 13-10 record.
Pollock retired the first 17 hitters he faced before Zach Leonard reached base with two out in the sixth on an error by shorstop Cameron Louie. Andrew Elke then broke up the no-hitter with a single.
SMU (18-25, 13-13) broke up the shutout in the seventh. After a pair of two-out walks, Bobby Twedt doubled for a run. NNU's Kalen Hruza then came on to get the final out to earn a save.
Pollock fanned seven in 6 2/3 innings in earning the win in the 93-minute contest. Michael McIver pitched a six-hitter for the Saints. NNU scored its runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings on singles by Tyler Nicholson, Joel Oliver and Sean McDonald.
In the first game, McDonald had three hits and three RBI and Oliver had a double and home run and drove in two runs. Connor Rankin and Ryan VanBeek also had two RBI for the Crusaders.
McIver and Leonard homered to account for SMU's first two runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively. Travis Jones had a two-run single in the eighth for the Saints.
J.T. Brodrick earned the win allowing just six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Three relievers finished up including McDonald who pitched two perfect innings, striking out two of the six hitters he faced.
