NNU earns series sweep of Saint Martin's, takes twinbill 10-3 and 4-1 on Saturday

NAMPA - Northwest Nazarene got 6 1/3 scorelss innings from its bullpen and 22 hits and 14 runs from its offense in sweeping a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill from Saint Martin's Saturday at Vail Field in Nampa.

The Crusaders (18-14, 10-5) won three all three games in the series including a 19-18, six-hour win Friday night and 10-3 and 4-1 victories Saturday.

Kalen Hruza won the second game, hurling the final 2 1/3 innings and allowing just two hits. He didn't walk a batter and fanned two.

In the first game, winning pitcher Charles Pollock (2-1), Hruza and Sean McDonald combined for a three-hitter. Pollock took a no-hitter into the sixth, but walked three batters and gave up a two-run single to Cody Brooks before being relieved by Hruza.

After a RBI single by Sam Larsen, Hruza got the final three outs and McDonald then blanked Saint Martin's (10-18, 5-8) on one-hit over the final three frames, fanning four of the 10 hitters he faced to earn the save.

McDonald, who started the game in centerfield, had four hits, scored three runs and drove in one. He also swiped two bases. The Crusaders also got two hits each from Kramer Uvila and Joel Oliver. Ryan VanBeek and Oliver had home runs.

Oliver and Ryan Udy had two hits each in the nightcap to lead NNU to the win. One of Udy's hits produced a run to snap a 1-1 tie in the fifth.

The Crusaders added two insurance runs in the sixth as VanBeek led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Rankin, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Rankin advanced on a single by Oliver and on a ground out before scoring on an error.

Sam Larsen had three hits and SMU's only RBI, finishing the twinbill with five hits in five at bats.

The Crusaders will travel to Western Oregon next weekend for a four-game GNAC series in Monmouth.
