Wolves complete sweep in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University Wolves (20-11, 15-3) wrapped up a four-game sweep of second-place Northwest Nazarene (18-18, 10-9) Saturday defeating the Crusaders 3-1 and 5-4 to open a 5 1/2 game lead in the conference race.

For the second consecutive day pitching dominated as the teams combined to score just 20 runs - 13 by the Wolves - in the four-game series.

WOU's Jacob Pettit (4-1) allowed seven hits in the nine-inning opener. Two relievers then combined to pitch three hitless innings in the nightcap enabling the Wolves to rally from a 4-0 deficit to complete the sweep.

Pettit walked one and had two strikeouts in his victory. Northwest Nazarene's run came in the fourth on a single by Ryan VanBeek.

WOU scored single runs in the second on a sacrifice fly by Cody Reeves, in the third on a homer by Kyle Boe and in the seventh on a single by Devon Bouvier.

Jesse Nunley pitched the fifth and sixth innings in the nightcap to win his third game against no losses. Gavin Hite retired all three batters in faced in the seventh, two on strikeouts, to record a save.

Northwest Nazarene built a 4-0 lead scoring twice in the third on a double by Sean McDonald and a single by Connor Rankin and two in the fourth on a single by McDonald.

WOU, however, tied it in the fifth combining four hits, a walk and two hit batters for four runs. Bouvier's single drove in the tying run. Then in the sixth Grant Glover gave WOU the lead with a single.

Glover had three hits and two RBI as he extended his hitting streak to 12 games. On the day he had five hits in nine at bats. Jason Moseby had three hits in the twinbill extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

VanBeek had three hits in seven at bats for NNU and extended his GNAC season-best streak to 17 games.
