NAMPA, Idaho – Sean McDonald tied the Northwest Nazarene single-game record with three doubles in game one and earned the pitching win in the nightcap as the Crusaders swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill from Montana State University Billings on Saturday afternoon at Vail Field.
NNU (13-12, 7-5 GNAC) won game one 13-7 and took game two 9-5. Charles Pollock (1-1) picked up the game one win and McDonald improved to 2-0 with the game two long-relief victory. McDonald entered in the top of the fourth for Crusader starter Zeb Sneed.
MSUB (6-15, 5-7 GNAC) was led by designated hitter Jordan Kessler (5-7, 2 RBI) and centerfielder Jeff Ridgeway (3-8, 4 runs). Brian Howe (1-4) took the loss in game one and Ryan Pollock (0-3) in game two.
The Crusaders pounded out 29 hits on the day, led by McDonald's 7-for-9, two RBI, and five run-scored effort. Jon Keller (4-7, 4 RBI) and Cameron Louie (3-6) both finished with three or more hits.
NNU's Pollock pitched seven innings, striking-out eight and surrendering four earned runs.
MSUB scored two in the first and two in the second, but Pollock settled down to hold the 'Jackets scoreless over his remaining innings, allowing the Crusaders to rally for three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. With one out in the third, Pollock struck-out seven of the next nine hitters he faced.
Game two winner McDonald pitched four innings, allowing only two hits and one unearned run while striking-out five.
The Crusaders will return to Vail Field on Tuesday and Wednesday when they host Hawaii Pacific University in a pair of NCAA D.II West Region doubleheaders. Both are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
